Portfolio & Research Examples

Kathleen Hinckley, Certified Genealogist, has over twenty years experience researching Colorado family stories such as these:

William A. Lang - Prominent Denver Architect

William A. Lang, born in Ross County, Ohio, in 1846, arrived in Denver in 1885 when nearly forty years old. He designed over 250 buildings during his short career in Denver, ranging from chicken coops to cathedrals. Lang was the architect for the Molly Brown House, home of the "Unsinkable Molly Brown." Building permits, land records, census schedules, court records, newspapers, and city directories were searched in a long-term project commissioned by Dr. Charles O. Brantigan who was compiling a biography of William Lang.

The Waters Brothers - Prominent Mining Engineers in Colorado and Japan

The client hired the Family Detective to search for photographs, newspaper accounts, mining deeds, and court records of the Waters Brothers--Thomas James Waters (1842-1898), John Albert Robinson Waters (1846-1902), and Joseph Henry Ernest Waters (1851-1893). The Family Detective located the only known photographs of the Waters Brothers and acquired numerous articles and documents from the Arthur Lakes Library, Colorado School of Mines; Denver Public Library, and San Miguel, San Juan, and Ouray County courthouses.

Davis Waite - Colorado Governor 1892-1894

A descendant of Gov. Waite commissioned the Family Detective to research the Waite family in Colorado. Gov. Waite was the only Populist governor of Colorado and one of a few Populists to ever hold office. Under Waite's leadership, the women of Colorado were given the vote. Governor Waite's scrapbook was located at the Colorado State Archives and photocopied for the client, plus the probate file of a nephew. Several newspaper references were also researched and copied.

Jacob Sands - Lover of Baby Doe Tabor?

Jacob Sands (aka as Jacob Sandelowsky) brought the ex-Mrs. Harvey Doe from Central City to Leadville before she married Horace Tabor. Jacob Sands ran the Sands-Pelton Clothing Store located in the Leadville Opera House building. Some historians claim Jacob Sands was gay; yet others claim he was the father of Baby Doe's stillborn child prior to her marriage to Horace Tabor. Genealogical research uncovered the identity of two brothers of Jacob Sands and provided more insight into Jacob's ancestry.

Family Heirloom Located at Colorado Historical Society Museum

A newspaper article about a well-known Denver resident mentioned that the family had donated several items to the Colorado Historical Society; therefore, the donation cards were examined to determine exactly what had been donated. Of great surprise and excitement for the client was the discovery that a carpenter's tool from the mid-19th century used by the immigrant ancestor and brought over on the ship from Germany had been donated to the museum.
